Ever-increasing costs and excessive deaths are undesirable consequences of floods and earthquakes.   Disaster mitigation is an essential and continual endeavor to reduce damages to property and citizens.   Mitigation will reduce the number of individuals and areas that are affected by disasters.   This essay will clarify the reasons why the community should invest in mitigation measures to reduce the impact of floods and earthquakes.
Flood mitigation is important for reducing the destruction to infrastructure, reducing the amount of deaths and personal injuries, and for saving crops, farm animals, and fertile lands, which are necessary to meet the food provisions.   By restraining or slowly discharging water, dams and levees will decrease the amount of damage done by flooding.   Land use strategies are important for designating where structure may be erected and ensuring buildings are elevated above or outside the flood zone.   Specifications for building codes ensure quality construction, thereby diminishing the loss of property.   The U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Geological Survey declares, “On average, floods kill about 140 people each year and cause $6 billion in property damage” (U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Geological Survey, 2006).  
According to a report by the DOI and the USGS, “Earthquakes are one of the most costly natural hazards faced by the Nation, posing a significant risk to 7 million Americans in 39 States” (U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Geological Survey, 2006).   Earthquakes can cause fractional or complete collapse of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure.   The consequences are possible discharge of hazardous substances, casualties, floods, and landslides.   Analysis of environmental structures would determine if an area is dangerous or should be avoided at all costs.   Implemented regulations, which prevent construction in hazardous areas that may be prone to landslides, would lessen injuries and...
