Discrimination still exists

  Jonathan Dion 12/7/11
The movement of radical body modifications such as tattoos and piercings are becoming an extremely common form of self expression in today’s world.  Self expression is ones way of showing the type of person they are, rather it being artistic by detailed tattoos or a simple "tough guy" with an eye brow piercing.  However, self expression is also a double edged sword, specifically in the job industry.  People of all ages, but mostly directed at ages 18-25 are finding that their piercings and tattoos are making it fairly difficult to find a job.  Jobs around the world are denying applicants the minute they step into an interview because of body modifications. This is similar to the counter culture movement of the 1960s.  "It changed the once conservative America into an extreme, liberal mind that now supported radical ideas." This movement was developed by people who wanted to widen social boundaries with an anti-establishment attitude.  These people preached love and sought peace, commonly known as "hippies".   They wanted America to be more open minded to these knew forms of self expression, such as music genres, new educational classes, hair style, sex and drugs.   The strongest connection between this and today’s cultural advancement was the hair styles.   Men began growing their hair long which was a huge change in the 1960s.   Billboards made by people against the movement were raised all around the country saying “Beautify America, get a haircut”(coursework.info).   Just like with body modifications in today’s world, people were denied jobs.   Over time, America became more accepting to men with longer hair and this “hippie” style of life until they became just more “normal” people living among us.   So, why is it that with such a huge movement being only a mere 50 years away and so similar to a cultural change in today’s current world, are members of society being discriminated for having body modifications?...
