As you can see, the football players lifestyle isn’t exactly fit for marriage. Traveling has to be one of the biggest issues. The players are always out and about; During the week they have meetings, practice, and need to work-out and prepare for their next opponent. It pretty much is an all day thing, so by the time they get home there’s not much time to spend with their family. Not to mention that they are exhausted from their training. I had the chance to talk to Oakland Raider, TJ Houshmandzadeh, the other day about this at work and he said, “It’s tough, it really is. Most guys just can’t resist the tempatations. Fortunately, I found the right woman back when I was in junior college and we have a beautiful family today.”   So after the weekly grind if they players do not have a home game, they usually have to travel far distances to their game. They usually leave sometime on Friday and won’t get back home until Sunday night. So there really isn’t much time to be spending with a wife, or kids for that matter. Also, all the tempataions of being alone on the road and hanging out with the guys.
According to Greg Bishop of the New York Times, the percent of NFL players’ marriages ending in divorce is an astonishing sixty to eighty percent. Greg interviewed New York Jets player Kris Jenkins and his reasons for failed marriages with football players are: “Rampant infidelity, women who target athletes, trophy wives, lifestyles not conducive to marriage and players being surrounded by entourages, which can discourage intimacy.” For the most part, it’s an unrealistic lifestyle and it’s hard for the guys to keep their life balanced. I believe upbringing has a lot to do with it too. There are a lot of players who growing up were, always “that guy.” They had people looking up to them and they had a reputation to maintain, which has a lot to do with it.
