Down syndrome (DS) is a condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops. The symptoms of Down syndrome can vary widely from child to child. While some kids with DS need a lot of medical attention, others lead very healthy and independent lives. Though DS can't be prevented, but it can be detected before a child is born. The health problems that can go along with DS can be treated, and there are many resources within communities to help kids and their families who are living with the condition. All people with Down syndrome have an extra portion of the 21st chromosome present in some or all of their cells. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with the syndrome.
The condition was first recognized by John Langton Down in 1866. He was a physician from Surrey, England. Down first noticed the facial features of those with Down syndrome, this prompted him to start his research. DS was one of the first conditions to be linked to genetic abnormality. In 1959 Swedish geneticists determined that the correct number of human chromosomes was 46. When they discovered the extra chromosome in patients with DS, the link between conjunction and disjunction was confirmed (M. Winzer. 2008. Children with Exceptionalities in Canadian Classrooms. Normally, at the time of conception a baby inherits genetic information from its parents in the form of 46 chromosomes: 23 from the mother and 23 from the father. In most cases of Down syndrome, however, a child gets an extra chromosome - for a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46.
