The beverage industry has been and will always be a giant influence in the lives of everyone.   Associating a refreshing beverage to any relaxing or leisure time activity is not uncommon.   An example of this is shown by a family at a restaurant or even a dinner in their home.   The children commonly have a soda, milk, or juice, while their mother and father enjoy a cocktail or another kind of alcoholic beverage.   The lasting question from this example is: when is the right age for a child to receive an alcoholic drink?   This question has been pondered for decades and still remains.
The beginning of the debate began in the early 1900’s.   At this time it was not uncommon for a young boy to enjoy a beer because generally he worked to support his family instead of receiving an education.   This all changed in 1920 when the Temperance Movement took center stage.   The 18th Amendment proclaimed, “After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited” (“Constitution”).   The United States went for thirteen years with Prohibition when the government noticed citizens were getting their hands on alcohol no matter what the cost.   The federal government repealed the 18th Amendment by ratifying the 21st Amendment.   This benefited the federal government because they then received tax on all the alcohol sold within or exported out of the country.   Most states, after the Prohibition, set their minimum drinking age at 21 years old to match the voting age.   This was a longstanding position that did not fluctuate until 1970.   From 1970 to 1975 twenty-nine states change their minimum drinking age to less than 21 years old because of the change in voting privileges to 18 and because of the soldiers returning from Vietnam.   There was such uproar...
