The Home Loch
I still remember the day it all started. It was August, and I was lying on a blanket in the summer sun. I had been outside with Ewan and Fiona all day, we had played football, been out horseback riding, and been down at the loch even though we were not allowed. We were completely sure that there lived some kind of sea monster in that lake; Fiona claimed that it was a mermaid, while Ewan and I were convinced it was a sea serpent, just like in Loch Ness. As we were walking home over the fields, we agreed that whatever happened, and   wherever in the world we might be, we would come back to our loch when we grew up. Then we would take the perfect picture of the sea monster and become rich and famous.
When I came home, the whole house smelled of mom’s homemade shortbread. When dad heard me come home, he called me from the living room. He was sitting by the fireplace with some papers when I came in. “Look son” he said. “This is England... London. Isn’t it beautiful?” He showed me a picture of a big tower with a clock. I recognized it from all the pictured dad had showed me as Big Ben. Next was a picture of a red bus, and some streets and castles. Mom came in and looked over my shoulder and down at the pictures. “Ha!” she said. “That ain’t nothing. We have much bigger castles here, and they are way older. And as far as that tower goes, I’m completely fine with the Grandfather Clock in the kitchen.” I agreed. I didn’t understand what dad was so fascinated by about London. Everything seemed so busy and stressful. There were no big open areas of green to play on, no trees to climb in… and no friends to play with. Suddenly I felt uncomfortable staying in the living room. Dad had been talking so much about England lately, even more that usually, and I was beginning to feel scared that he was thinking about moving there.
