Ethical behavior has certainly become a very important issue over the past few years. The economic downturn could be attributed to ethical behavior or rather unethical behavior. Many people will say the mortgage crisis is a major part of the economic problems being faced in this country. Ethics in a business environment are becoming more important than ever before.
This paper will focus on what business ethics are. Emphasizing some of the ethical issues within today’s business environment that affect communities and organizations.
What is Business Ethics
According to D&B (2007), Business ethics are “moral principles concerning acceptable and unacceptable behavior by business people. Executives are supposed to maintain a high sense of values and conduct honest and fair practices with the public” (Business Glossary, para. 1).
With the mounting problems the United States and the rest of the world today, several of which are linked to unethical business practices. Business practices are coming under close scrutiny by the public as well as the government. It is of the most importance that business owners and leaders operate their business in a way that serves employees and the public in the best way possible. A company with an ethical business model will provide a product or service that does what the company says it will.
Many ways business ethics can affect a community or organization such as; discrimination, accounting or reporting practices, social responsibility, liability and accountability, and corporate responsibility.
