The question of whether physician-assisted suicide should be legal in Canada has been a hot topic in recent months. The law already allows palliative sedation, but the Supreme Court is reconsidering a bill being put forward in the Senate to allow physician-assisted suicide, a debate that should be decided by the beginning of 2016. This controversial and sensitive issue raises complex and emotional questions whether patients with certain medical illnesses and disabilities should have the right to request and get help to end their life early the way that able-bodied Canadians can. This dilemma of assisted suicide raises social, medical, ethical, and religious questions. Some Canadian organizations have expressed views against legalizing assisted suicide and are worried that patients might be forced into seeking physician-assisted suicide (National). Also, having that option available might disrupt and slow down the progress of medical research that may not offer a cure at the present, but could find one in the future. Furthermore, there are questions about physicians’ roles, since the Hippocratic Oath obliges doctors to “do no harm”. Certain religious groups that oppose any form of suicide see it as going against God’s will and believe that suffering is a part of everyone’s life to endure. On the other hand, some Canadians feel that patients who are suffering and have an incurable illness, have a constitutional right to assisted suicide, and the autonomy to make the choice. Not having that option available violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms because able-bodied people can commit suicide but those with physical limitations can’t. Proponents of assisted suicide feel that the issue is not a matter of killing but rather of relieving pain for those who suffer from degenerative diseases, and that physicians have a duty not to abandon their patients (Global).
