The Ever Changing World of Nursing
In our ever changing nursing world, we are governed by many fractions of both the federal and private sectors. Outside of these governing boards, there are organizations that work to provide evidence-based studies that are unbiased and community focused. These studies are used to drive decision making at the state and federal level. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is one of those organizations.   The IOM was established in 1970 as an extension of the Academy of Science, which was governed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Their goal is to provide the recommendations to change regulation and policy through diligent studies that will improve health. The work of the IOM has the largest impact on the health of the nation and of the world. ("Advising the nation * Improving Health," 2014). The IOM holds annual meetings that highlight topics which they compile into a report. The topics of these reports provide insight to the impact on health care.   This paper will show how the Institute of Medicine has impacted nursing education, as well as how they impact nursing practice, and the leadership role of the nurse.
Impact on Nursing Education
“In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM)

Launched a two-year initiative to respond to the need to assess and transform the nursing

profession.   The IOM appointed the Committee on the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing,

at the IOM, with the purpose of producing a report that would make recommendations for an

action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing” (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative,
