Diabetes Mellitus Disease Report
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a very common disease, with 8.3 % of the U.S. population diagnosed and an estimated 7 million are undiagnosed (Huether, McCance, Brashers & Rote, 2012). It increases risk of infection because of decreased nutrient absorption (Potter, Perry, Stockert & Hall, 2013) and is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States (Huether et al., 2012).
Disease: Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes Mellitus is caused by a resistance to insulin or the underproduction of insulin by the pancreas. It can be developed as a result of lifestyle choices but also commonly runs in families (O’Toole, 2013).
Type I DM is caused by an autoimmune disorder and the patients are insulin dependent. Type II DM is usually diagnosed later in life and can often be controlled through diet and exercise, although some patients require oral medications or insulin injections as well. Gestational DM can be developed by women during pregnancy and may or may not resolve itself once the baby is born (O’Toole, 2013).
Having DM places the patient at greater risk for coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular accidents, erectile dysfunction and orthostatic hypotension (Potter et al., 2013). It is also associated with the increased occurrence of age-related macular degeneration, amblyopia, color vision deterioration, sensorineural hearing loss, proprioceptive dysfunction and pituitary infarction (Huether et al., 2012). DM causes chronic vascular changes that impair healing (Potter et al., 2013) and compromise epithelialization (Huether et al., 2012).
Because DM is a chronic illness, it can affect the roles and responsibilities of the patient and strain family relationships.
