Family, Job, Education--My Development
Strung out, junkie, wasteoid, living off of the welfare system and doing nothing with my life—that could have been me. Instead, I am a family man, I have a wonderful wife and two great kids, I hold a steady job, and I am a member of the U.S. Army.   I have learned valuable lessons by watching the work practices and mistakes people have made around me in my life. I am enjoying a life now that most people would be lucky to have, all due to my upbringing, good or bad and the people and education I have experienced. I have developed into the man I am today as a result of family influences, educational choices and job experiences.
My school years were not all that exciting. I grew up basically with no brothers and sisters, since I was adopted by my grandparents; I called my grandfather   my father, I called my grandmother   my mother, and I called my brothers and sisters   my uncles and aunts.   I went to school with no siblings. Neither of my parents was overly educated. Both dropped out of school at a young age for various reasons. I didn’t get much help from them academically when I was in school. I had to learn much on my own. I remember trying to teach my father to read when I was in the 5th grade. My father in turn taught me the value of hard work. He instilled the desire to work to get what I wanted out of life. Nothing would come easy to me unless I worked hard for it. According to Parents (1994) magazine, 11 and 12 year old children have developed enough maturity to value what their parents do every day for work. I grew up watching my parents, specifically my father, work from sunrise to sunset nearly every day.
When I was 13 years old I got my first job cleaning out cattle trucks. This was the epitome of a “crappy” job. I had grown up watching my father and mother work diligently to provide for our family. Most kids my age at that...
