Family Sociology Project: Essay Portion
A family is a fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children. Two types of families for example are German-American and Mexican-American. These families are American families with German or Mexican descent. For German Americans, they began to immigrate to the Americas around the year 1700. Many were fleeing their homeland to find an easier life that in other countries. From the early 19th century until now, they have made their stay in the United States and make up 17.1% of the population. Some key aspects of the German-American family such speaking German English language, practicing main Christian religions such as Lutheran or Catholic, as well as Jewish. The German-American family has a developed music culture, rich history, superb education, and have made important contributions in American culture and technology. The current population is around 50 million people.
The first Mexican-American families flourished in the mid-1800’s. Since then, the population has grown vastly; most of the people live in California, and Texas, making up 60% of their total population in the U.S. Key points of the Mexican-American family are examples such as their main form of religion being Roman Catholic. Strong signs of machismo and Familism play a role in the culture of the family. The concept of familism can be found in sociological literature from the mid 1940’s. The family is a most sacred part of the Mexican-American heritage. In total, they make up 10% of U.S population (31.8 million).
The American family, on the other hand, is a traditional family support system consisting of two married individuals providing care for their biological offspring. In American history, the husband usually works and the wife stays at home. However, this two-parent, nuclear family has become less common.
