In fashion, where the standard of beauty is not yet as ambiguous and subjective as it is in the world of modern art, proper use of design principles, which are formulated to objectively determine whether a design is ‘good’ or ‘bad’, would seem to be vital in creating aesthetically pleasing garments that appeal to the public. While this is true to a certain degree, fashion designers today have more freedom to explore aesthetics. Fashion designers started to innovate and showed that the effective use of composition is the essence of all design principles by solely relying on the use of composition without any restrictions to the convention of the design principles. Following the revolutions and democratization of Europe, garments were no longer uniforms heavily dictated by traditions and customs of aristocracy   Fashion designers were no longer bound by the traditions and their clientele grew to include people of all background. For the first time fashion designers started to explore aesthetics and design. This development reached its peak during the late 20th century with the emergence of visionary designers such as Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen . Their rebellious designs that were often contextually as well as visually challenging seemed to completely disregard any conventional design elements but because of their ingenious use of compositions and ambiguous balance created by asymmetry and imbalance , they gained wide acceptance as well as critical acclaim in the fashion world but ultimately, it’s the context which gives any artist the freedom to explore and it is the context in which these radical designs were shown that enabled the world to change its view on design elements and aesthetics.
