“First to Fire”

World War I, commonly known as “the war to end all wars,” began in 1914 during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson.   It was during this war that a new threat emerged, various types of aircraft equipped with new deadly weapons. With this new danger came the responsibility of military leaders to combat this threat and protect soldiers and allied forces, Brigadier General James A.   Shipton answered this call, he would become known as the founding Father of Air Defense.   This essay will address the birth of air defense, how equipment advancement was used to combat the ever-changing threat in the sky, and how the Air Defense branch contributes to the Army and world mission.     The history of the ADA branch begins with three Coastal Artillery Corps (CAC) officers, led by Brigadier General James A. Shipton, left for France with orders to assemble an Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) service during World War I.   With limited resources such as, no properly trained men, no tactics, and no equipment, the AAA service from its beginning grew rapidly and accomplished more with less.   For example, the AAA service could shoot down a German airplane with one-twentieth the ammunition required by the British antiaircraft units.   It was during WWI that American air defenders conceived and tested the fundamentals or air defense- mass, mix, mobility, balanced and overlapping fires and defense in depth- that formed the basis of today’s air defense.   Brigadier General James A. Shipton, who is known as, the ADA branch's founding father, felt that the mission of antiaircraft defense was not to down enemy aircraft, but to protect the maneuver forces on the ground: "The purpose of anti-aviation defense is to protect our own forces and establishments from hostile attack and observation from the air by keeping enemy aero planes at a distance.” (ADA Branch)...
