The mise en scene of this film begins with Seth the older of the two Gecko brothers, entering the motel office and ringing the bell for assistance. After having a few choice words with the motel manager, Seth and Richie back into the parking spot in front of their room and open the trunk of the car revealing their hostage. Once in the room, Seth sets down the rules he expects the hostage to follow and goes to get food, leaving Richie and their hostage alone in the room. After Richie has the hostage join him on the bed the scene changes, to the other three main characters of the film. The three are located in a restaurant where they are having dinner and discussing their plans for their trip into Mexico. The scene switches to a news report of the daring bank robbery, and court house escape committed by Richie to get his brother Seth from custody, and exposing Richie as a sex offender. In the next scene Seth has returned to find that Richie has raped and murdered their hostage this infuriates Seth, who considers himself a professional thief and sometime murderer and anything but a rapist. The next scene which sets up the taking of the Fuller family as hostages is where, Jacob Fuller almost runs Seth Gecko down with their motor home in the parking lot of the motel.
The two Gecko brothers who are on the run from the Texas Authorities, and The F.B.I. for bank robbery, murder, and escape, are on the way to Mexico to meet up with their contact, Carlos (Cheech Marin) who will provide them with a safe haven from the U.S. Authorities in a town called El Rey. In need of transportation to get across the border, the two brothers take the Fuller family, and their motor home hostage, using the family to sneak across the border.
