Have you ever loved someone and wanted to spend the rest of your life with that person? Have you ever had feelings for someone and felt desperate to show it? Imagine having all of your feelings locked away, never speaking about it or acting on it and not being able to be with the person you love. That is how many gay people feel throughout the world. There are many reasons for this such as they may feel afraid of what other people will think of them and they may feel as though their families and societies would not accept their emotions and feelings. We live in a time of modern ideals and diversity so why does this sort of discrimination still go on? Why is a society that has learned to accept other races and beliefs, still oppressing a group of people and stopping them from being who they really are?
Throughout the world, even in the most developed of countries, cultures and societies have prejudice towards people that are gay. Christians, Muslims and other religions and groups have scorned gay people for decades so it is understandable that many gay people are afraid or cautious about ‘coming out’ and telling their friends and family that they are gay. This brings onto the point of gay marriage. When a person loves another person should they not be allowed the right to share their love in a bond such as this?
Many people will say that being gay is a choice and that in our society today, it has become ‘cool’ and ‘different’. This, they will say, is backed up by an idea that homosexuality did not exist centuries ago so it has only become this way as people have ‘chosen’ to change their sexuality. But in fact homosexuality has existed as far back as Ancient Greece. In addition, it is only obvious to assume that people from these times also felt maybe ashamed or scared to show openly their feelings for the same sex, as they too lived in a society that thought homosexuality is wrong.
