The Effects of the Past Continue to Affect Women’s Wage
The gender wage gap has narrowed faster because women have showed labor market experience in the last twenty years. In the last two years, the wage gap between men and woman has changed from 77.0% to 77.4%; therefore, the wage gap has been closer between these two genders (“Gender” par. 1). In ancient times, everything was different for these two genders because men were the people who kept the economy of their families. For example, women used to do just domestic tasks and take care of their children at home and men were responsible to work very hard to bring money to their homes. Since then, the gender wage gap has affected women and men. Because of this fact, many companies think that women are not designed to do different kinds of tasks and they do not have the same skills as men. For example, men are more likely to have mechanical or computer skills and women are more likely to have nursing or childcare skills. Therefore, the gender wage gap affects women more than men because of the circumstances that happened in the past. Even though there are positive things that women have showed to decrease discrimination in the last twenty years, there are also so many facts which are still affecting women such as having less education, stereotyping, and fewer working hours.
A positive factor in the gender wage gap is that discrimination has decreased a lot in last decade. Even though some researchers have showed that discrimination has not disappeared, there are few countries trying to minimize discrimination such as New Zealand and Turkey. For example, the main organization in New Zealand is working to decrease the discrimination against nurses. “About 93 percent of our members are women, and those in the older people's care sector are some of the lowest paid workers in New Zealand, earning only slightly above the minimum wage on average”(“Pay”).
