Global Warming: Fact or Fiction
In the beginning of the twentieth century many scientists started discussing that the globe is increasing in temperature and that man is the very cause. The thought of the globe warming is quite a frightening idea to the American people and people all over the world. It is believed that man’s carbon emissions, like burning fossil fuels, logging of forests and forest fires are to be the cause of the warming of the globe.
Over the past century the Earth’s average temperature has risen 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit and it is expected to rise another 2 to 11.2 degrees over the next hundred years. The evidence is clear in the rising of global temperatures along with changes in weather and climates. Several places have seen changes in rainfall, resulting in floods, droughts or intense rains and also many heat waves. Another big change on this Earth is its oceans are warming and becoming more acidic, ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising. We have seen the droughts, the awful heat waves, the intense rains and the crazy climate changes right here in the Midwest just in this past year. Some might say well yes but you are in the Midwest and the weather normally changes quite often with little notification but could it really be all the signs of global warming, right here in our own backyards?
Many of human activities have released large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The majority of greenhouse gases come from the burning of fossil fuels along with deforestation, industrial processes and some agricultural practices also release gases into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are sort of like a blanket of gases that are around the earth. They trap energy in the atmosphere, therefore causing it to warm up. This happening is what we call the greenhouse effect, which I am sure you have heard of. This steady built up of greenhouse gases can change the Earth’s climate and have...
