What is globalization? What impacts has globalization had on crime and crime prevention nationally and internationally?

Globalization refers to the increasing interdependency between nations. It is a range of economic, technological, political and cultural changes that encourage countries to work together and depend on one another and grow through industrialization. The main cause of globalization is influence from other, more developed, countries. Scholte (2000) suggests that five simultaneously occurring factors promote globalization; the first is Internationalization meaning cross-boarder relations and international trade partnerships. Secondly, there is Liberalization which is the erosion of regulatory framework manifesting in freedom of movement for example in Europe one can move goods from Germany to France to Sweden without tariffs. Thirdly, Universalization where one can travel anywhere in the world & encounter one’s own culture such as China town in Melbourne, little Italy in Las Vegas; it is essentially a synergy of culture. Scholte then lists, Westernization (or “modernization”) which refers to the hegemonic process of western culture, influence and economic ideas. The impacts of modernization are often seen as a threat to local cultures and traditions. For Example, in the middle of the forbidden city, a sacred and historic marking on China’s culture there are “the golden arches”. Lastly, there is deterritorialization which takes the idea of no boarders to it’s extreme theorizing that national, sovereign territories are becoming increasingly defunct as areas of power where territory per-se has little currency. There is the aspect that this may threaten sovereignty, but this is also a transformation that reflects social relations; where one can communicate and trade without being bound by territory. It is basically the ability to communicate across boundaries; with no real geographic territory boundaries to prevent communication.
