'Almost invariably doomed to defeat and eventual massacre, the great insurrections were altogether too disorganized to achieve any lasting result. The patient, silent struggles stubbornly carried on by rural communities over the years would accomplish more than these flashes in the pan' (Bloch 1966, p. 170). These were the words of Marc Léopold Benjamin Bloch, a quintessential French historian who, in his book French Rural History, sought to prove that the successes of the peasant revolt in French agrarian history was one that required 'a society of great compactness, composed of men who thought instinctively in terms of the community while the land itself was the fruit of collective labour' (Little 2008). This, to Bloch, was the true meaning of social resistance and will also be the central theme of which this essay will be built upon. This essay will humbly attempt to bolster the argument that although there are many types of social resistances in existence all seemingly battling against one cause or another, the form of peasant, individual or everyday resistance has the potential to bring about the most changes and have a defining impact on both social and political spheres.
The first section of this essay will built the foundation of the argument by initially highlighting the context of this discussion which is the complexities of resistance in a world increasingly affected by globalization. This will be followed by a necessary definition of the term 'social resistance' and what characteristics does it acquire to render it unique from mere public reluctance in the second section. By highlighting the Gramsci's theory of hegemony and counterhegemony, the third section will look at the birth of contemporary resistance, the popular international protests in the late-1990's. The fourth section will explore the alternative or everyday form of social resistance using Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri's arguments in Empire and Multitude as a possible...
