The smell of White Shoulders by Gloria Vanderbilt consumes my senses. The crispness of the cold in that old wood frame house tickles my face. The crackle of wood in the blackened cast iron, claw foot stove radiates the room. The faint rustling of the cattle and crowing of the roosters falls upon my ears. The soft sunlight slightly penetrating the humidity in the air from a hot shower brushes my cheeks. As I slowly open my eyes and become aware of my surroundings and all the comforts, I realize it is another early Sunday morning at Grandma’s house. That old house contains more than just windows and doors, more than just walls filled with knick knacks, more than the praying hands photo in antiqued black and white with the bubble front frame. That house is more than just a small clapboard home in the middle of acres and acres of yellow and purple flowers that dance in the wind. That house is more than religious beliefs instilled into a child in hopes of raising a strong Christian woman. That house was my home, shared with second-generation German immigrants trying to make their way in this sometimes brutal world. This home was a woman, so full of grace and light that her only goal everyday was to make sure her family was fed and clothed and the garden was tended. This woman made it her goal every day to share life secrets and pass on knowledge from one generation to the next, because that is what a good Christian parent would do. Never once did it ever occur to her that she would impact a life and change the future of so many with her words and actions.
Promptly, every Sunday morning at 8:45, Grandma and I walked from our home in our fresh-pressed denim skirts and collared pastel button down shirts and get in that old 1978 ecru- colored Lincoln Continental and off to church we went.
