Hector, the selfless defender of Troy, died because of his pride. Hector had to make the choice when defending the gates of his beloved city; Should he retreat behind the safety of the walls and protect his people or head out to the plains to confront Achilles. Hector was the greatest of the Trojan heroes and arguably greater than those of the Greeks. But Hector was great for a different reason; rather than the pride and lust for glory that made every other hero great, Hector was great for his selflessness and devotion to Troy. Hector did not make his choice of whether to retreat or fight with the well being of his people in mind. Rather he was worried about how his people would view him after his loss to the Greeks after Polydamas’s warning to retreat. Examples of Hector being a selfless leader can be found early in the Iliad. During the first battle with the Achaeans, Hector reluctantly leaves battle to find Paris. When Helen asked him to sit he became angry, asserting, “My heart is out there with our fighting men. They already feel my absence from battle” (VI. 380-381).   Hector realizes his presence in battle is what inspires his troops. He also acknowledges that he has a great responsibility to Troy as a warrior and leader when he stated, “War is the work of men, of all the Trojan men, and mine especially” (VI. 518-519). Finally, when Andromache begged Hector not to return to battle, Hector explained that he must return to battle because it was his duty to the people of Troy and his father. Hector declared, “I have learned to be one of the best, to fight in Troy’s first ranks, defending my father’s honor…” (VI. 467-469).   So it is clear that Hector has had the best interests of his people in his heart, and it is his selflessness that makes him such a great hero.
