Below is an essay on "Holden's Thoughts" from Anti Essays, your source for research papers, essays, and term paper examples.

In Catcher in the Rye Holden describes many objects, items, and numerous people as being phony. He calls movies, his old teacher Spencer, and even his own brother D.B phony along with other things throughout his story. In Holden’s story Holden goes through a lot of adventures as well as many different thoughts and ideas that rush through his mind. Holden sees a lot of people and experiences a lot of difficult feelings that he doesn't understand so much, but he does understand the world of phony. What is phony? And most of all what is phoniness in Holden’s mind?
Holden’s thoughts on life are simple. Either something is good or bad; true or false; real or “phony”. When I see phoniness from Holden’s perspective I can kind of see Holden’s point. I can agree that Holden’s definition of phoniness and my definition of phoniness at some point crosses on the same imaginary line for some brief moments but Holden’s meaning on phoniness means more to him and is clearer to Holden then my average thoughts of phoniness. One thing I am clear about (to me) is that the world IS phony. If you think about it, we are truly granted one thing that is 100% possible to happen without a doubt to everyone in this world. That, my friend, is Death. Everyone is granted death no matter...
