There were many factors that were critical in the success of the Bolshevik's uprising in October of 1917. Some of these were to do with individuals like Lenin, Kerensky or maybe even Trotsky. Other factors were more to do with contextual factors like the War and the on-going land issue in rural areas. Finally there were the beliefs and motivations of groups like the Bolshevik's and Kerensky's Government.

As an individual Lenin was extremely important in the October revolution. After he had been forced into temporary exile in Finland the remainder of the Bolshevik party leadership didn't seem to to press for an armed uprising. In fact they had attended a democratic congress, much to Lenin's chagrin, to maybe consider joining the Provisional Government (PG). After Lenin's return and the success of placing an armed revolution on the Central Committee's agenda some leading Bolsheviks still had grave doubts about whether this was a good idea; in fact Ziniovev and Kamenev went as far as to speak out against Lenin in a newspaper article, which alerted Kerensky to the imminent danger. What this shows is that without Lenin at their front haranguing them, the other Bolsheviks weren't so keen to rise up and take power. This was also shown early in the year, before Lenin's return to Russia from Switzerland. The Bolsheviks in Russia had printed in 'Pravda' (their newspaper) that their members and followers should support the Provisional Government, and also that they had given serious thought to the idea of combining with the Mensheviks. This was all very contrary to what Lenin wrote in his 'April Theses' which clearly laid out his views and beliefs on the subject. A key point of his 'April Theses' was "No Support for the Provisional Government", yet without him his party were preposing just that; tentative support for the Provisional Government.
