Education is not a high priority. Or at least, that’s what they believed in the small town of   in Eastern Pakistan, where I was born and raised. In order to qualify for the public school, you have to be either offspring of a government official or be from a rich family. And even in these modern times, basic education is not compulsory but rather frowned upon. Since there is no law against child labor, parents would rather put their children to work instead of sending them to school so that they can cope with their poverty. Fighting against our community’s social norms, my parents put me through high school and then proceeded to send me to the United States for higher education and a better future.
When I came to the United States, I had to face a lot of challenges that typical students wouldn’t encounter. But mainly it was most difficult learning in a foreign country along with an unfamiliar culture and language. In addition, I had no family or relatives to support me. I was worried about not being able to understand English well enough for my classes and I was a long ways from being able to carry on a conversation. Yet, I was eager to learn new and better standards of life, which would provide a promising future for my family and me.
In my first year in college, I would record my class lectures and then listen to them over and over again until I was able to understand and make sense of everything. Taking notes was a new concept to me, as back home there was no notion of it. Going over the notes and recorded lectures really made a very significant difference in raising my grades. It put me through a lot of stress because I had too much on my plate. However, I had the responsibility of getting my college degree even if it was in a language which was entirely foreign to me.
