The industrial revolution had profound effects on American women, because as production shifted from homes to factories, it shifted away from women doing the producing. This led to the “cult of domesticity.” The cult of domesticity decreed that a woman’s place was in the home, so rather than making things the job of women was to enable their husbands to make things, by providing food and a clean living space, but also by providing love, friendship, and mutual obligation. Only very low paying work was available to them and in most states they couldn’t control their own wages it they were married. But, still poor women did find work in factories, as maids, or seamstresses. Some middle class women found work as teachers, which was disreputable at this time, but the cult of domesticity held that a respectable middle class woman should stay at home. Women needed to be supervised for fear of them doing something immoral. The women who worked at the factories lived in factory owned dormitories away from home. They tend to look to the owners and overseers for advice and guidance. When one such owner forbid his workers for participating in an after work class, she became concerned for their well-being. Working all day, living in tight cramped quarters with no recreational time to yourself would eventually take a toll. Solitude is an important factor needed for a balanced psyche. It allows your body to catch up with your mind and rest your brain. It prevents burnout and reduces stress. Permits a time for self-discovery and provides an opportunity for overall perspective. Without this the women were more likely to lose themselves in the factory and forever be stifled.   As Americans we pride ourselves on our free will. In the factories free will is essentially being stripped away.
