Islam and the Media Essay
Islam is an Arabic word that means “submitting to god”. It’s a continuation and confirmation of the same message that was given to earlier prophets like Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus and ending with the last prophet Mohammad (peace be upon them all).Islam provides a complete guide to one’s life. For long period of times there have been many debates on things the media misrepresents about Islam .Dress code and jihad have been distorted while Islamic terrorism has been stereotyped in the media. The media misrepresents Islam in different ways.
In Islam if you kill an innocent person or thing it is considered that you have committed a grate sin. Quran states, “If anyone slays a person unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land it would be as if he slew all people. And if anyone saves a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all people” [Quran 5:32].The word terrorism is defined as the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims, this definition is far away from what Islam means. Islam means “peace”, and it’s believed that Islam is truly the cure to terrorism not the cause. In this religion it is said to fallow justice, peace, mercy and forgiveness and the majority of the people have nothing to do with violent events. There was once a story about a woman who was cruel to her cat. The prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) once said “She did not look after the cat properly" he said. "She did not give it anything to eat or drink”. People around her were very disappointed of how cruel the woman is and told the woman that the cat is one of Allah's creatures, just as we are. Later on the cat had died of hunger and Prophet Mohammad had said “that this made Allah very upset that someone can hurt a creation that he has made”. Islam views violence as a sin and when the media explains that Islam encourages violence it is wrong.
