Jail Overcrowding

Prison and jail overcrowding is one of the biggest issues the American correction system faces. The United States imprisons more criminals than any other nation in the world. The federal and state governments passing tough crime legislation is resulting in the prison and jail overcrowding. People may think that overcrowded prisons and jails affect the inmates, the guards, and the system; but in reality the overcrowding affects all of the American people, our economy, and our lives.   Having over 2 million people in the United States behind bars, research is being done to find the best way to solve the problems of overcrowding by eliminating overcrowding.
According to the latest statistics from the United States Department of Justice more than 2 million men and women are behind bars in the United States.   Jail over population in the Unites States is the main result of state and local governments passing tough crime legislation. For example, California passed the “three strikes and you’re out” law which called for mandatory sentencing of repeat offenders, and New York adopted the “Broken Windows” strategy that called for the arrest and prosecution of all crimes large and small. Policies such as these reduced crime rates, but increased populations in jails and prisons (" American legislative," 2012). Sentencing guidelines and a growing amount of drug related convictions is increasing the prison population. This is making it common for non-violent offenders to be incarcerated longer than a violent offender. Two consecutive life sentences, or maybe three, (at 20-25 years per life sentence) without the possibility of parole, would be considered punishment for crimes of murder; but recently a Mississippi man was convicted 100 years for a drug charge. (Loftin, 2010)   Sentencing is not based on the impact of criminal activities, but according to maximum sentencing guidelines.
