Jumping to conclusions is like putting two and two together and getting five. When our minds race in the wrong direction, it can lead to false conclusions. Many people judge others very harshly. Seven percent of a person’s first impression of you is based on what you say, thirty-eight percent on how you say it, and fifty-five percent on your appearance and manner. McCarthyism and the Salem Witch Trials have many differences and similarities that show a lot about how people can jump to extreme conclusions.
Around 1692, in a little over a year, nineteen people and two dogs were killed for nothing. This is what’s known as the Salem Witch Trials. It all started when seven girls were found dancing in the forest which was forbidden in Puritan culture. Suddenly two girls got really sick and no one could figure out why. The people of Salem suspected the girls were conjuring spirits in the forest that night. After one of the girls was confronted about it, she blamed a slave from Barbados, Tituba, for controlling the girls. Since Tituba was an outsider and a woman, she was easily believed. Most of people whom were convicted were, in fact, women and outsiders. A girl of eighteen became very sick and weak so it was determined she was a witch and was executed. A woman by the name of Martha Carrier was an unsubmissive woman with an independent mind. She was accused of bringing smallpox to her family and causing certain deaths that allowed her to inherit the family land. No one knows if she did this on purpose or by accident but now that the people had a reason to convict her for witchcraft, they took it. But sadly, the main reason that caused her to be executed was her behavior. No one stopped to get to know her; they just jumped to conclusions without getting all the facts. You see, we have a problem here. Hysteria became dramatic because people jumped to conclusions for people’s peculiarities. Many people were killed for naught.
