Lend a helping hand to help a Homeless Individual
We all of have seem them standing on the side of the street with a sign asking for some change and reading I’m Homeless. How many of us have actually stopped and gave money or helped the individual? I remember riding in the car with my mom and her friend when I was young. We stopped at this house with an old man sleeping on the pouch of an abandoned house with a dirty blanket. My mom and her friend gave the helpless man some money. We need to realize these individuals are not just adults they’re children too. In Richmond, VA we need to come together as a community and help the homeless people, move them towards independence along with understanding their situations and effects of being homeless.
Richmond, VA was once considered one of the most industrialized cities in the South. After World War II it became one the fastest growing industrial centers in America. So how do people become homeless in a city with so much business? Well after major tobacco companies and chemical companies like DuPont and Ethyl Corporation had shut down many people had to go into low wage retail, service jobs and temporary labor. These people were no longer able to afford their houses and that’s when they became homeless. Even after the recession there was a 7% increase in Richmond's homeless population. Homeless is defined as an individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. In January of 2011 it was recorded a total of 943 adults and 159 children that were homeless. We need to come together and get these homeless people off the streets. There has been an 11 percent increase in homeless people who are unsheltered; which lead to the increase in emergency shelter by 26%.
