The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that the reason the Lewis and Clark expedition succeed was because of the Natives. The way I will prove my thesis is by discussing the two main tribes that helped which are the Shoshone’s and Nez Perce. They helped with guidance and proving them with the things they needed to succeed there expedition.
Lewis and Clark expedition would have been lost without the guidance of the Shoshone’s. In a primary source Lewis writes, “We needed the Shoshones to procure horses from them in order to cross the immense mountains to the west. Also, we needed their guidance, for we do not know the way across the mountains…” (Lewis). This quote proves that they needed guidance because the expedition would have been hopelessly lost without the help of the Shoshone’s and also it would have been immensely hard to cross the steep Rocky Mountains if they didn’t procure or in other words get horses for them. Stated differently Lewis explains “Were it not for the Shoshone’s horses, we would have no food to survive on.” (Lewis). In other words this quote shows that the Lewis and Clark crew had a very difficult journey but meeting the Shoshone’s provided them food and guidance which was the main things they needed to succeeded in this expedition.
Furthermore the help of the natives continued to come throughout their journey. If they had no help of the Nez Perce coming out of the mountains would have been struggle. Captain Lewis states “Today we came upon some members of a tribe from the Nez Perce Nations. They guided us out of the Mountain passes into a lush valley…” (Lewis). This quote demonstrates that one of the reasons they needed the help of the natives was because they knew their way out of the mountains and that made Lewis, Clark and his crew easier to get out of. More help came website National Geographic stated “When Clark and other members of the expedition emerged exhausted and starved from their journey
