“The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, is told by a young, poor, black girl named Sylvia who is on her summer vacation. Sylvia and her friends are taken on a field trip by an older black woman named Miss Moore who recently moved onto the same block. Because Miss Moore has a college education, she feels it is her responsibility to keep the neighborhood children educated even on their summer breaks. Miss Moore is determined, on this day, to teach the children a lesson on the nature of money and the differences money can have on the many social classes. Miss Moore wants the children to understand that people who make more money can afford to purchase more expensive and higher quality things. And that with an education like Miss Moore has, the children can also work hard to afford those same expensive things.   Miss Moore takes the children to a toy store in the upper class area of Manhattan, called F.A.O. Schwarz, where she instructs all of the children to look in the windows before they go in and the children realize the outrageous cost of all the toys in the store. Once they finally enter the toy store, and Sylvia has the full experience of the differences in wealth, she becomes bothered, but is acting as if she is bored and uninterested. Sylvia expresses in her thoughts that she feels funny, something like shame, but she tells herself she has nothing to be ashamed of. She does not want anyone to think that those kinds of differences bother her. When they have finally left the toy store, even though the other children are speaking their thoughts about the experience, Sylvia keeps quiet and will not tell the others of her feelings.   You can tell from the story that Sylvia and many of the other children are round characters in nature from the descriptiveness of the different sides of their personalities.
