I was squirming in my seat uncontrollably on the way. “You’re going to be fine. Middle school is the best,” my mother said as she tried to sooth my nerves. But I didn’t feel like I was going to be fine because I was going from elementary school straight to middle school and that seemed like a huge jump. I would only spend two years here and then I was supposed to be prepared for high school and then college after that? It didn’t seem right. I felt like a baby, fresh out of sixth grade, which was in a building labeled elementary school! It was all happening too fast, especially the car ride. Before I knew it, it was my turn to in the drop off line. I had to get out of the car and I was so incredibly nervous. My knees were shaking, my heart was racing, and my breathing was rapid. After my mother’s reassuring hug and reminder to take my lunch money, I was out, on my own.
I was certainly not nervous for the social aspect of middle school. White Settlement is a small town where everyone knows everybody and all of their business. These were the same kids I’ve grown up with all my life. Heck, even some of the teachers taught my parents when they were in middle school here at this same school, probably in the exact same classroom. No, I was more nervous that mentally, I was not prepared for the work. After all, I didn’t even stay with the same group of students all day. I was expected after each class to find my next class all on my own, in this huge building. It certainly was a lot bigger than the small wing of the elementary school designated for sixth graders where the teacher would escort you to your next class.
Despite how nervous I was the day went off without a hitch. Every class was the usual; get your syllabus, fill out this sheet about yourself, and take this home for your parents to sign. Then of course, the teacher would fill up the rest of the class time by either talking about all of the things we are going to cover over the school year, like projects...
