An Uncivilized World
Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage’s whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men. In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, it is proven that the lack of civilization can cause a person to become savage. In his novel, Golding shows how a group of British young boys try to survive in an island, after a plane incident, without civilization. Through the character development of Jack, Golding shows how one of the innocent young children on the island is transformed into a savage. Jack is developing into a savage, it is proven though many points in the novel that he is not civilized and he is given characteristics of an animal.
Society, the place where there are certain rules and standards to find a person acceptable. However, there is no society on the Island; there are no adults to tell the boys what is acceptable and what is not. The boys are able to make their own decisions and live their live however they want, yet their decisions make them to begin acting like a savage. In chapter three, while Jack is in the forest, he starts to experience his first animal characteristics. Jack’s appearance has drastically changed since there is no one around to tell Jack what is accepted in society and what is not, “a pair of tattered shorts held up by his knife-belt he was naked” (Golding 62). Jack being naked can possibly remind readers of a caveman. Cavemen are savage human beings that had no rules and did whatever they desired. Jack is shown as uncivilized during this point in the novel due to him being naked. In a civilized society everyone is dressed and the people, who are not are viewed as an unacceptable part of society. Also the only thing holding up his shorts is his “knife-belt”; which is another symbol of him becoming savage. There would be no other reason for Jack to have a knife with him other...
