Management and Prevention of Colorectal Cancer
Nutrition and diet play an important role in maintaining the health of individuals. Nutrition and diet can also have a positive effect on the lives of individuals who have been touched by certain diseases. Nutrition can help prevent or can reduce some symptoms associated with the disease at hand. The terms “good nutrition” and “healthy eating” can have different meanings for different people. Some see their diet as “healthy” even though to others it can be seen as toxic to their health. It is important to educate people about nutrition, health, diet, and exercise in a manner that makes sense to the individual. The purpose of this paper is to educate those living with colorectal cancer about their nutrition as well as to educate those at risk for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer can be prevented with some habit changes, including diet and exercise.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer world wide (Kampman, 2009). Colorectal cancer affects the colon, or final portion of the digestive tract. The colon, along with the rectum, stores the fecal material before it is excreted from the body through the anus. Colorectal cancer usually begins with the formation of polyps. Polyps are “small growths in the lining of the colon and rectum” (Lahey Clinic). These polyps can, over time, grow larger and may potentially develop into cancer. Colorectal cancer can occur at any point during one’s life, but the risk of developing this type of cancer increases with age. There are many risk factors associated with the development of colorectal cancer. These risk factors include: “family history of colorectal cancer, family history of colon polyps, personal history of colon polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, or previous cancers” (Lahey Clinic).
