It was the human nature to move from one place to another to find more suitable living environment. Human would migrate into new place when they think that their previous habitat is no longer appropriate for them to stay in. In fact, even our ancestors had traveled from one place to another in order to avoid resources scarcity or natural disasters. Comfortable living environment is always essential for human to survive; therefore migration continues to occur until now in every part of the world. Nowadays, due to some issues in Jakarta, many young workers there think that Jakarta is no longer a conducive place to live and consider moving to other countries such as Singapore. Leaving to Singapore seem promising for a good living environment, but staying in Jakarta will be more pleasant.
As one of the developed countries, job opportunities and salaries offered in Singapore are definitely high; however, they are balanced with sky-high cost of living. According to Yahoo! Finance, Singapore is the seventh world’s most expensive city to live in 2012, where it applies the second highest electricity tariff in the world. In Singapore, you might just prefer to rent a room in private apartment, as it is almost impossible for a young worker to afford buying a house here. However, the room rent is not cheap. The price starts from US$1,500 per month for a room in condominium, which is more than twice higher than in Jakarta. Moreover, food in Singapore is also slightly more expensive to Jakarta’s. A plate of Chicken Rice in Singapore’s hawker center can cost around US$3, while in Jakarta it can be bought with only US$1 in Jakarta. Owning a private car in Singapore is almost impossible for young people due to high price for the Certificate of Entitlement (COE), but luckily Singapore offers cheap but reliable public transport systems where you will only need to set aside approximately US$250 per month to take either bus or MRT daily to work.
