Moby Dick Final Essay: Revenge
There are several stories that tell a tale of revenge and vengeance. However, Moby Dick by Herman Melville manages to branch out of the generic revenge plot line to incorporate a story with a symbolic and meaningful plot that is one of the greatest literary works of all time. Moby Dick is really about Melville's portrayal of mankind's constant endeavor for revenge and this is illustrated through Captain Ahab's uncontrollable obsession with vengeance his disregard for anything that may stand in his way.
Ahab has an overwhelming passion to get revenge on Moby Dick.   Now he has made it the Pequod’s mission to kill Moby Dick. "Aye, aye! And I'll chase him round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom, and round perdition's flames before I give him up. And this is what ye have shipped for, men! To chase that white whale on both sides of land, and over all sides of earth, till he spouts black blood and rolls fin out." (143) This is the first time that Ahab admits he is on a wild quest for Moby Dick. By saying he will go to the ends of the earth and even to Hell itself to get Moby Dick, this quote emphasizes that Ahab will not stop until he squelches this need for revenge. Melville’s intent for including Ahab’s announcement to the crew is to display that when people set their minds to get revenge they are determined nothing will stop them. There are many sacrifices that Ahab makes to chase the White Whale that are not worth it commercially. Starbuck challenges Ahab, "I am game for the crooked jaw, and for the jaws of Death too, Captain Ahab, if it fairly comes in the way of the business we follow; but I came here to hunt whales, not my commander's vengeance"(143). Starbuck's advice is ignored then and again later. Starbuck is trying to extract from a whale a valuable material used to make perfume that would bring in a large profit.
