Dark Traditions carried along through times
As human behavior evolves, societies develop new patterns of conduct popularly accepted, however, the isolation of some societies and the strengthening of particular customs could make change and progress a hard thing to achieve.   Such is the case of a chapter from the famous television series The Twilight Zone titled   “The Beacon” written by Martin Pasko and Rebecca Parr, contrasted with Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” from the book “Literature” A portable Anthology.   Both stories give us a whole perspective of how a paradigm could be inserted into a society and conserve itself throughout many generations no matter what the moral consequences could be.
Primarily, both “The Beacon” and “The Lottery” take place in small communities with little population where diversity seems to be absent.   Particularly, “The lottery” refers to a small town of three hundred people where its residents know each other; in the same way, “The Beacon” recreates itself in what it seems to be a very small-populated village with a general store and rural roads. Being a group of individuals of such few members, it is easier for an idea, in this case a tradition to stick among them without having the danger of dissipate it self through time nor even change.   Moreover, “The Beacon” and “The Lottery” equally allude to traditions or customs in the form of some sort of ritual that have been happening during two hundred and eighty years respectively. The essence behind the rituals in both stories is based on supernatural reasons supported by beliefs of wellness and abundance to each society.   For example, the character Mr. Cooperjames from “The Beacon” says “…we are protected, our needs are met, all because of the power of the beacon makes it so, but our blood lines must remain strong, so when the beacon ask for anything, we give it gladly”; they believe that a spirit called “Seth” lives through the beacon and he decides who will be sacrificed by...
