In recent years, psychologists have been branching off from the original theories of general intelligence. General intelligence is a factor that underlies specific mental abilities and is therefore measured by every task on an intelligence test. Now, psychologists believe that there are multiple intelligences and that the tests, therefore, do not accurately represent one’s intelligence.
Howard Gardner believes that there are eight intelligences that people can have, each separate from each other. There are the linguistic and logical-mathematical aptitudes (those assessed by standardized tests), but then there are also musical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and naturalistic. Spatial intelligence is that of analyzing the visual world, bodily-kinesthetic is mastering movement skills such as dance, intrapersonal and interpersonal are insightfully understanding ourselves and others, and naturalistic is having and understanding and appreciation for the natural environment. Gardner believed that if a person is weak in one or many areas, they may have considerable strengths in others and therefore a general intelligence score is not representative of a person’s true intelligence. Gardner developed his theories using such evidence as the fact that brain damage diminished some types of abilities but not others and that those with autism may excel in mathematics but cannot read facial expressions or pick up on others’ emotions. He also studied people with savant syndrome which is a condition in which a person otherwise limited in mental ability has an exceptional specific skill (these people often score low on intelligence tests but are completely brilliant in another area such as music or computation). Through these studies and observations Gardner established his ideas including his statement that artists, computer programmers, sports stars, and street smart adolescents, all exhibit different types of intelligence.
