Abstract
The No Child Left Behind Act was reauthorized in 2001 by former President Bush. NCLB is to help under privileged children have a better chance at improving their education. The No Child Left Behind Act has brought about many changes such as taking standardize test and giving the children option of changing schools if that school under performs.

The No Child Left Behind Act
Prior to No Child Left Behind Act there was the Elementary and Secondary Education Act; which was put into place to help disadvantage students. There was a reauthorization of this program called The No Child Left Behind Act that garnered significant changes. NCLB was put into play to enhance educational equality for students from lower income families by giving funds to school districts serving less fortunate students (Tavakolian & Howell, 2012).
Impact on Teachers
The No Child Left Behind Act impacted teacher’s greatly. New teachers were required to have one or more college degrees in particular subjects, to be fully certified, and to show subject matter knowledge by tough a proficiency test. Existing teachers including tenure teachers had to meet the same standards. Teachers are also held accountable for the outcomes of their students’ academic performance (Tavakolian & Howell, 2012).
Adequate Yearly Progress
NCLB has required states to conduct yearly student assessments linked to state standards, to distinguish schools that are neglecting to make “adequate yearly progress” and to institute sanctions and rewards based on each schools AYP status. If AYP is not meet for persistently low performing schools there will be sanctions imposed on these schools. These sanctions consist of school restructuring, implementing public school choice, and replacing staff (Amrein-Beardsley, 2009).
