      Overpopulation is one of the most significant social problems facing Egypt. Despite it being a big issue, many people do not seem to have any idea concerning the rising rate of population growth and the effects that overpopulation drags to Egypt. The population of Egypt in the past decade has increased by nearly six times. Egypt stands to be the largest among the Arab countries due to her large population. The population has increase to eighty million as of today from fifty-eight million in 1995. Among the fifty-eight million people in 1995, twenty million were children of fourteen years and below. Having such a big number of children has forced so many of them to be abandoned on the streets.
      The significant eruption of population of Egypt in the past decade has been brought about by some obvious factors. These factors include improved health care, scientific advancement, and higher life expectancy rate, which, seems to increase every year. Due to the tremendous improvements in the health care sector, the number of newborn deaths has reduced at a very high rate. The education system in Egypt has also contributed so much to the enormous child population (Bombeck, 1998).The male child happens to be favoured by the education system in Egypt. Due to the favour on male child, a big number of women do not attend school and so they opt to have children at a very tender age. Egyptian people have this notion that when one has many children the family will have many workers. Having more workers translates to the family having more money to survive on. Therefore, this has lead to young parents perceiving children in terms of money.   The purpose for large families according to the Egyptians is that children have to work hard and earn more money that will take care of their parents at old age (Bombeck, 1998).
