“The Story of an Hour,” by Kate Chopin, is about a character named Mrs. Mallard who believes that her husband is dead allowing her to picture a new life of freedom for herself. Chopin suggests that all marriages, even the kindest ones they all go through tribulations. Mrs. Mallard has a bizarre way of revealing her martial problems that are inherent in the institution of all marriages. Each reader’s judgement of Mrs. Mallard and her behavior towards her husbands death stems off to her own personal problems with her husband about there marriage and the influences of the social expectations. Reader’s different views on past, marriages and genders allow each reader to react differently to Chopin’s portrayal of the Mallards’ marriage and Mrs. Mallard’s reaction towards the death of her husband. The theme of this story is that freedom and confinement are forbidden pleasures seen through the private eye. Mrs. Mallard, is restricted in many of ways through her marriage and the lack of communication from her husband. Mrs. Mallard begins to see that her freedom is seen through false belief that her husband is dead, and she dies when she finds out the truth.
