Scientific Study of Personality
Personality is the distinctive individual qualities of a person considered collectively (Agnes, 2003). Most people only consider the distinctive individual qualities of a person and not how that person has originated, but a psychologist is different. A psychologist job is to consider the collect aspects of an individual’s personality and how he or she interconnect. The purpose of this paper is to explain how a psychologist defines personality, to discuss the most commonly used research methods to identify personality and how they differ, and name the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
How do Psychologist Define Personality
When someone is said to have a good personality, he or she is usually referring to that person’s social skills within a social setting, not an understanding of that person’s existential being. A psychologist job when defining personality involves a much more complex way of explaining an individual’s personality. According to Cervone & Pervin (2010) a psychologist defines personality as qualities that contribute to an individuals enduring and distinctive patterns of feeling thinking and behaving. The most important reason it is difficult for a psychologist to identify someone’s personality because of scientific observation. There are three requirements for scientific observation. One, the psychologist must study a large and diverse group of people. Psychologist use scientific observation to make the observations accurate. Second the psychologist observations must be non-biased. To achieve objectivity a psychologist must remove stereotypes and preconceived notions, and describe the findings so someone else can replicate the findings to verify the results and make sure he or she are correct.
