Pilates has benefited me in numerous ways. It has benefitted my muscular system in that it has increased my core strength and added slight definition to my legs and arms. I am able to perform the core strengthening exercises for longer periods now and with better techniques as I have become accustomed to them and the muscles needed to perform them. When we first started doing Pilates in class my back was continuously hurting, but now my back muscles are tighter and my back hardly ever aches anymore. I also had problem with my shoulder and knees. In using the resistance bands to perform activities such as squats and lateral pulls, my knees hurt less and are able to endure more; similarly, my shoulder has improved and has gained back loss strength. Balance and coordination played a role in increasing my muscular system as well, causing me to use specific muscles for different positions held. The level of flexibility within my muscles I initially had and where I am now has increased. My hamstrings don’t tighten up as quickly now when engaging in activities that required the extension of them. With increased muscular strength, regarding to the core for example, I have obtained better posture, something that will benefit me years to come.
Pilates has helped with my level of physical activity which has in return increased the circulation of blood flow throughout my body. This allows for better oxygen flow and simultaneously better functioning of the brain, a key element in Pilates (mental strength). Pilates calls for an increased heart rate; therefore, the amount of calories burns increases, helping me to lose weight. Doing activities such as Pilates helped increase the strength of my heart muscles. I have noticed that I don’t tire out as easily. Also performing daily tasks such as walking up the stairs have become easier because of better controlled breathing because of an increased cardiovascular endurance, so I am taking in more oxygen than I had been doing.
