The Political Stagnation of Nepal

Nepal, when asked to others, is mostly viewed as a peaceful country, with no notable wars with other countries and also because it is rarely talked about in the news.   However, as a citizen of the country, I have seen radical changes in the government through innumerable civil wars that greatly affects the livelihood of people. Political turmoil that causes cities to close down indefinitely crippling local business and schools to function is now taken casually. Hundreds of people who take part in strikes against the government’s every other decision are injured by the police force through atrocious measures such as releasing tear gas and beating them up carelessly. It might be surprising to note that there hasn’t been any change in the constitution as planned for about 4 years because the deadline keeps being extended for no reason. It is one of the gravest political issues that has contributed to the worsening of the situation of the country as a whole. Every time the deadline gets nearer, the government officials find reasons to why it should be extended to a later date and they have successfully been able to do that four times starting 2007. It is questionable whether the constituent assembly will be held on Nov 22 2012 as no progress can be seen until now.
Nepal is currently governed under the Interim Constitution of Nepal, 2007, which had replaced the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal. That happened after the 240-year-old Hindu monarchy was abolished as the Constituent Assembly (CA) members overwhelmingly voted against it and so Nepal was declared a Federal Democratic Republic. This was the result of 19 days of protest and strikes against monarchy and then the declaration of a tree-month unilateral ceasefire by the Maoists.
