Many people every day wonder the question, “Are pro athletes over-paid?”
The answer to that question is simply, yes. The salaries of the professional athletes playing the game today are out of control. The effects that is has on the game is not nearly as bad as the effects that it deals on the players.
Once upon a time athletes were not paid amounts of money nearly this large for their physical abilities. Instead they worked more than one job, lived a completely normal life, and simply played the sport they played for a hobby. During that time there was no such thing as a contract. The only agreement between a general manager and an athlete was a shaking of hands. Nowadays there are contract negotiations headed by lawyers and agents (Mattson). Truthfully the only effect the player has on how much he/she is paid is the physical ability they bring to the table.   If it were not for all the contract negotiations and “legal” issues that a player runs into during their career, they would not need to spend all this money on agents, lawyers, and financial advisors. With all the legal actions that are taken towards athletes by someone trying to score a quick pay day, it is easy to see why exactly an athlete would need a lawyer. Simply turning on the television or reading a newspaper will reveal that there is another athlete being sued for something that they probably did not even do. They are constantly being looked at under a microscope by everyone waiting for them to make a mistake so that they can be sued for a quick buck. If a person who is not a professional athlete bumps into someone of an opposite sex, it’s not a big deal. But if a professional athlete so much as bumps a person of the opposite sex they are sued for millions and millions of dollars for sexual harassment. Take Ben Roethlisberger for example. In 2008 he was sued by a woman named Andrea McNulty. She claimed that he asked her into his room to fix his television and forced her into having sex with him....
