Psychodynamic Theorists
There have been several theories over the years that have defined personality development. First, Freud and his influence on the development of personality will be discussed.   Secondly, how analyst that followed Freud dissented from his viewpoint. Third, the links between theorists in the psychoanalytical theory groups will be explored. Finally, other psychoanalytical concepts will be discussed.
Sigmund Freud was the founder of psychosexual and psychoanalytic theory. His psychosexual theory states that erogenous zones differ at various times throughout development (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). The first stage is the oral stage which sensual gratification focuses on the mouth (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010).   The second stage is the anal stage which Freud believed there is an enjoyment in the anus and in the movement of feces through the anal canal (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). The third stage is called the phallacy stage which an individual finds tension and excitation on the genitals (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). During the latency stage, aperson becomes less focused on sexual urges (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). Sexual urges combined with the onset of puberty begins the genital stage (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). Freud believed that there were three levels of awareness (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). The conscious, preconscious, and unconscious level are the various degrees in which Freud suggests that we are aware (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). Thoughts that we are aware of at any given moment are at the conscious level (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). Mental concepts that we can easily recollect if we wanted to are at the preconscious level (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010). The unconscious level contains mental concepts that we are unaware of unless special circumstances are present (Cervone, & Pervin, 2010).
