An Accurate Depiction of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in the movie Analyze This
Most of the time when we watch a movie it is for entertainment. A lot of the time there is a real story behind it that has something to do with psychology. The media does not always portray psychologists and psychology itself accurately. The 1999 movie Analyze This gives a good portrayal of depression and mixed anxiety but a poor portrayal for what an ethical psychologist would be. In the movie it shows one of the main characters suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Research has found that persons who suffer from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder get it after some major trauma like assault, jail time, death, or rape (Bisson, 2007). People that have PTSD suffer with bad flashbacks of the event, feeling detached, having problems getting aroused or staying aroused and even feeling sick.
The movies focused around the two main characters Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) and Ben Sobol (Billy Crystal). Robert De Niro played the role of Paul Vitti who was a big time mob boss and Billy Crystal played Ben Sobol who is a psychiatrist. Vitti is trying to deal with the recent passing of his close friend and Ben is trying to get ready to walk down the aisle. These two very different people ended up together through Ben running into the back of one of Vitti’s and one night and give “Jelly”, Vitti’s helper, his business card. Sadly for Ben that night Vitti told Jelly that he felt like he needed a “head doctor” and Jelly told him about Ben. Then next morning to Ben’s surprise he got a visit from Vitti himself. Paul Vitti tells him that he wants him to rid him from his problem in two weeks before the big mafia meeting. The other problem comes in where Ben...
