  * The study done by Vandiver, Dial and Worley (2008) examines the effect that the sex offender registry has had on female sex offenders. It also goes on to assess the experience that women sex offenders have going through the criminal justice system. This research also relies on Braithwaite’s crime, shame, and reintegration theory to assess the extent to which the processes described in his theory occurred in this sample. The researchers were seeking to examine experiences of woman sexual offenders and that is what they accomplished; but I also feel like they tried to comprehend whether or not the public registry is practical. This study uses qualitative approaches to obtain data on the research questions posed. Qualitative research is defined as a “naturalistic, interpretative approach concerned with understanding the meanings which people attach to phenomena (Ritchie & Lewis, 2003, p. 3)”. If a quantitative approach is used, researchers can obtain information such as the percentage of women who experience a negative judicial process and negative effects because of the public registry. However, they cannot obtain information on the women’s perspectives. Without these data, it is difficult to understand whether or not the registry has had an effect on their lives. Therefore, in this type of research I believe that the qualitative approach was the best fit.
