After watching the news story from ESPN called “Beautiful Game Turned Ugly: Racism in Europe’s Soccer Arenas”, I am truly shocked by some of the featured information. To an extent, I am aware that racism is still present in our world, but hearing about the racism in soccer was new to me. There are always going to conflicting opinions in our society, especially with regards to race because many believe they are the superiority in a racial or ethnic group. Because of this idealogy that one race is better than another, races often discriminate against one another. In European soccer, both discrimination and prejudice are present. When an individual is prejudice, they form a pre-judgement about a particular group of people through generalizations and stereotypes. When an individual is discriminating upon another person, it is generally an action or behavior that results in unequal treatment to an individual because of their membership in a certain racial or ethnic group. The ESPN news story highlighted the issue on race in soccer very well. They began by explaining to the audience that racial outburts and slurs are a regular part of the game for the African American players. A man in the audience screamed out that he didn’t care what color the players are, if they are black or orange, in his eyes they were garbage. How could people stoop so low and degrade people because of their skin color? The clip goes on to explain that fans throw bananas on the field, because they consider the black players animals or monkeys, when no matter ones skin tone, we are all basic human beings. Every single game the “different” players are taunted by people sitting in the stands. Eventually, they are going to reach their breaking point. This is exactly what happened to a soccer player whose last name is Zoro. Zoro got so aggravated one day that he could not stand to be silent any longer; he could no longer face the harsh comments and lashed out on the audience. Zoro picked up the ball...
